How to show up in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers: what actually works

What Google and OpenAI actually say about appearing in AI answers, and the practical steps a small business can take, without tricks or false promises.

In 30 seconds
  • Google says there is no special trick for AI Overviews. Pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
  • AI tools quote pages that answer one question clearly, with facts they can check.
  • Being mentioned on other trusted sites, with the same business details, helps AI tools recognise you.

A customer types into Google: “best way to stop a dripping tap”. At the top sits an AI answer, with three websites cited underneath. None of them belong to a local plumber.

The same customer asks ChatGPT: “plumber near me who answers on WhatsApp”. It names two businesses. Yours isn’t one of them.

AI answers are now part of how people search. The good news is that there is no secret to them. The same clear, honest pages that work in normal search are what AI tools quote. This is how we approach our AI search visibility service.

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are the short AI-written answers at the top of some Google results. They summarise an answer and link to the pages they used.

Google says something important in its own guidance: you don’t need special optimisation to appear. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal search. Then the usual good practices apply.

That means no tricks, no special code and no hidden text.

How do ChatGPT and other AI tools find businesses?

AI assistants such as ChatGPT can search the web when they answer. OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to find pages for search answers. If your site blocks it, your pages can’t be shown there.

Other assistants work in similar ways. Many use web search results, so being found in Google and Bing still matters.

What makes a page more likely to be quoted?

AI tools quote pages that are easy to understand and easy to trust. In practice:

  1. Answer first. Put a clear 2 to 3 sentence answer right under the question.
  2. Use questions as headings. “How much does a boiler service cost?” is easier to match than “Our pricing”.
  3. One idea per paragraph. Short paragraphs are easier to quote accurately.
  4. Link to original sources. Facts that can be checked are safer to repeat.
  5. Show who wrote it. A real name, a real business and a way to contact you.
  6. Keep it up to date. Put an “updated” date on the page and mean it.
Weak page Stronger page
“We offer quality services at fair prices.” “A standard boiler service takes about an hour and includes a safety check.”
One long page about everything One page per service, one guide per question
No author, no date Named author, updated date, sources

Does structured data help?

Structured data is code that tells search engines what a page is about: a business, a service, an article, an FAQ.

Google says structured data is not required for AI Overviews. It still helps search engines understand your pages, and it is required for some rich results. We add it to every page we build.

Why do mentions on other websites matter?

AI tools build a picture of your business from many places. Your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews and articles that mention you.

When those places agree on your name, services, area and contact details, it is easier for a tool to recognise and recommend you. When they disagree, the picture gets blurry.

Keep your details identical everywhere. Name, short description, website link and phone number.

Step by step: a simple AI visibility plan

  1. Check access. Make sure your robots.txt doesn’t block Googlebot, Bingbot or OAI-SearchBot by accident.
  2. List 20 real customer questions. Take them from calls, emails and WhatsApp.
  3. Answer each one on the right page, answer first, with a question heading.
  4. Add structured data for your business, services and FAQs.
  5. Fix your listings so your details match everywhere.
  6. Check monthly. Ask the same questions in AI tools and note who is cited.

Common mistakes

Buying “AI ranking” packages. Nobody controls AI answers. Pay for work, not promises.

Writing for robots. Stuffed keywords read badly to people and to AI.

Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Some security plugins do this by default.

Different details on different sites. Old phone numbers and old addresses confuse everyone.

A simple next step

Ask ChatGPT and Google three questions your customers ask you every week. Note which websites are cited. That list shows you what your own pages need to do better.

Good AI visibility starts with a healthy website, covered in the small business website SEO checklist. For local businesses, reviews matter too, as Google review rules every business owner must know explains.

Quick questions

Can anyone guarantee my business appears in AI Overviews?

No. Google and other AI tools decide what to show. Anyone who guarantees it is making a promise they can't control.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It does no harm, but Google's guidance for AI features doesn't ask for one. Clear pages, structured data and a healthy site matter far more.

Is AI search optimization different from SEO?

It builds on the same foundations. Indexed, fast, clear pages with honest facts. The extra work is answering questions directly and making your business easy to recognise across the web.
